Go Green
At Saranac, we think “Going Green” is a way of life. That is why we have been hard at work to recycle, reduce and reuse as much as we possibly can. While this can be a fairly large task we can promise you one thing…at Saranac we will continue our Go Green efforts now and in the future. Here are just a few examples of how our brewery is environmentally friendly…
Recycle
Have you ever wondered why we have smiling cows in New York State? It is probably because they feast on our spent grains used to make our delicious brews. At our brewery we recycle 100% of our used grains by selling them to farmers in New York State. Along with our grains, we recycle all components used in production and packaging such as aluminum, glass, plastic straps, cartons, 6 packs, 12 packs, and more.
Reduce
In the 120 years the Matt family has run our brewery, it has always been a major priority to reduce the amount of natural resources we use to make our beer. We have a sophisticated program to curtail energy uses at times of peak demand by cutting back non-essentials in the plant and cutting back components such as lights and air conditioners in our offices. Packaging has been significantly updated with lighter cans and bottles and a new bottling line with fewer motors that are more energy efficient. While our primary focus is on energy and the reduction of material used in packaging, we are constantly striving to do more with less in every aspect of the brewery.
Reuse
We reuse as much as we can in the brewing process including recycled packaging materials, aluminum, glass, and water. In our brewing process, we have been using recycled CO2 for years. We are able to recover the CO2 during fermentation and reuse it to carbonate our soft drinks. Also, through our heat exchange process we have the ability to save one barrel of water per barrel of wort to reuse in our future brews.
